Our Story

How the Canadian ICU RD Group Began

In 2010, a small group of critical care Registered Dietitians in Toronto recognized a gap: ICU dietitians across Canada had no dedicated platform for peer collaboration, clinical knowledge-sharing, or professional development specific to their specialty.

That local Toronto network grew steadily. The COVID-19 pandemic — and the mass transfer of patients across provinces — accelerated a national need. ICU dietitians from British Columbia to Nova Scotia faced the same complex nutritional challenges with no shared infrastructure to respond together.

That moment transformed a local group into the Canadian ICU Registered Dietitian Networking Group — now known as the Canadian ICU RD Group. Today, with over 300 members across Canada, we are the country’s only national professional community dedicated exclusively to ICU and critical care dietetic practice.
